Mr. Gary Smith joined the Transportation Security Engineering and Analysis Group in January 2019 as a Nuclear Nonproliferation Project Specialist. Responsibilities include a wide range of scientific, technical, and programmatic activities in all facets of the nuclear enterprise from nonproliferation to research and development pertaining to nuclear materials processing.
As a security subject matter expert with the Transportation Security Engineering and Analysis Group, Gary has worked on a variety of international and domestic projects sponsored by the National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of State, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, International Atomic Energy Agency, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Department of Energy Nuclear Energy Integrated Waste Management Program. Additional responsibilities include the design, implementation, training, testing, and exercising of physical security systems to include response for the protection of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear explosive or other high value assets. Gary supports ORNL’s extensive international and domestic Transportation Security Projects, participating in vulnerability and risk assessment activities, project management, instruction, and consultation services. Further duties include developing and improving training curriculum, as well as applying wide-ranging knowledge of physical protection systems such as access control, intrusion detection, assessment, and other detection applicable response protocols and procedures. Gary supports the following international portfolios: Central and Far-east Asia, North and Sub-Sahara Africa, Middle East, Central Europe and Latin America.
Prior to employment with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Gary served as a Program Officer with the United States Department of State Multi Threat Reduction Staff focusing on research and analysis of global threats. In addition to his recent years with DOS, Gary served with the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Secure Transportation as a Mission Commander. He is a 12-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps.
